Game #1

Blue wins Week 1: 56-14

The HBL couldn't have picked a better week to start the season.  85 degrees.  No wind.  Just perfect.  The only thing missing was the Co-Commissioner Eric Espejo.  Because he wasn't there to organize everything, the game was about 30 minutes late in getting started.

The Blue team won the toss and started the game with JP Lindo at QB.  He methodically lead the Blue team down the field grabbing chunks of yards with each play.  The drive culminated with 30 yard pass to Ben Roa across the middle of the field who then outran 3 people on his way to the endzone.

The Red team started their first series with the 2001-2 HBL MVP Steve Kovach at the helm.  Unfortunately, this year hasn't been as kind to him as last year was.  After a couple of completions to Koos Mbai and Donnie Conty, he was picked off by Macky Lopez on a pass over the middle.

Manny Mendoza took over QB duties from JP, but it was only for a couple of plays. After getting a first down and into a rhythm, Manny was picked off by Koos on a pass meant for Earl Espejo along the sideline.  Two plays later, with Steve back at QB for the Red team, the third turnover of the game happened.  A quick throw over the middle resulted in Ben's first interception of the year, who returned it to the Red 15 yard line.  One play later the Blue team went up 14-0 after Manny connected with Ben on an out pattern to the back left corner of the endzone.

With the Red team trying to get into a groove, they drove to the middle of the field.  On fourth down, Steve lobbed a pass to Sarah Davies who was running full speed towards the sideline.  As the ball was coming down, Aaron made a beeline to where he thought the ball was landing and hit Sarah's back foot, accidentally tripping her.  Unfortunately, it was in the rocky part of the field and she landed face first in the gravel, giving her a knot on the head and a black eye.

Manny took over and slowly drove his team down the field. He moved them all the way down to the 5 yard line where he threw a lob to Aaron Goodmiller who caught it and dropped both feet inbounds just barely scoring the touchdown, stretching the lead to 21-0.

Sensing they needed a change, the Red team switched up Quarterbacks and so Cesar Galang took over.  And from the first pass, the Blue team knew they were in trouble.  It was a rifle for 20 Yards to Daniel Ramirez.  He methodically took his team down the field spreading the ball around to Donnie, Richard Friend, Daniel, Koos and even the bruised and battered Sarah.  At the 1 yard line, the Blue teams defense finally held, and the ball was turned over on downs.

With 8 minutes left in the half, Manny drove his team the length of the field and ate up every single second he could.  Though, with 4 tries from the 10 yardline, The Red defense swallowed up all of the Blue receivers and allowed Manny no chance at making them down 4 touchdowns at halftime.

After Halftime, the Red started off again with Cesar at the controls.  He was rifling passes over the middle, down the sidelines, and hitting almost everything he threw at.  Until Mackey stepped in front of one of them and recorded his second interception of the game.

The Blue team wasted no time in working  their way down the field.  And Manny hit Mackey for a 10 yard td.

The Red team again got half way up the field but this time turned the ball over on downs. With Manny and JP switching back and forth on QB duties in this drive, Manny was the one who got to throw the 15 yard TD pass to Earl.  Putting the Blue team up 35-0.

Though the Red team would not be held down.  Because Steve injured his foot during the last defensive stand, he went back to being the QB.  And his first pass was a doozy.  A quick hitch to Koos out in the flat, and he was off to the races.  Koos outran everybody on his way to an 80 yard TD.

Though unfortunately, that is the closest the Red team would get.  The Blue team would Intercept the Red team once more (Mack with his third) and score two more touchdowns (one by Jon Pettyjohn and Macky's second of the day) before Cesar would mount another drive that ended with an 8 yard toss to Koos for a TD.

With 7 Minutes left and up 49-14, Aaron decided he would give QB duties a try.  He was able to drive Blue down the field (with the help of a Half-Back option play that resulted in Jon completing a 30 yard pass to JP).  With 30 second left in the game, Aaron threw the ball to Macky for his 3rd touchdown of the game.  Ending the game with a final score of 56-14.

Did you notice?

Macky had 3 TD's and 3 Int. A first for the HBL.

Manny spread the ball around for the Blue team making sure everybody got at least 5 catches each.

After Sarah's injury, she still had a shot at blocking JP on a pass play and even taunted him afterwards by saying "You know, I could've had you"

Everybody who played QB for the Blue team had a rating higher than 105
