Game #3

The Lead Changed More Times Than a Drunk Guy Wearing Depends on Super Bowl Sunday.

In a game that saw 5 lead changes and a whole lot of team commradery, Blue pulled out a 56-49 win. Not only was there a lot of offense during this game, but there was a ton of great defense as 10 sacks were recorded (2 of which were recorded by the League Leader in sacks, Sarah Davies [5], and she only played half the game).

Blue won the toss, be decided to defer the first possession to Red.  Eric Espejo took over at quarterback and started where he left off last week.  Unfortunately, it only lasted a few plays as JP Lindo intercepted a pass at mid-field.  Giving Blue great field position and a little momentum.

Manny Mendoza took the helm for Blue and marched right down the field.  And after a couple of dink and dunk plays he had Blue sitting on the 20 yard line.  Then in true Manny fashion, he dropped a pass over Donnie Conty's shoulder for a Touchdown, putting Blue up 7-0.

Not deterred by the interception he threw in the last series, Eric drove his team down the field with precision passing, spreading the ball around to everybody.  Then he unleashed the hounds and dropped a 30 yard pass to Aaron Goodmiller who was nailed right as he caught it just inside the goal line for the touchdown to tie the score at 7.

As Blue thought they would go right back down and score, Macky Lopez made other plans.  On the third play from scrimmage, Manny threw a pass over the middle, at which point Macky stepped in front of the receiver and recorded his 5th interception of the year.  A couple of plays later, Eric threw a drop pass to Macky and put Red up 14-7.

Red's lead would only last for a little bit as JP took over at QB for Blue.  He drove Blue right down the field and got them to the 30 of Red when he had a couple of close calls.  On consecutive plays, both Eric and Aaron had chances to pull down interceptions, but couldn't manage to hold on to the ball.  Then on the third play, JP threw a lob pass that Macky had a chance to intercept, but it bounced off his hands and into Donnie's, who ran it in for the score and tied the game back up, 14-14.

A determined Blue drove all the way down to the 10 yard line when newcomer Jarrod Tackett pulled in an Interception on the 5 yard line.  The only thing that saved a touchdown was Allen Mendoza's shirt tail tag of Jarrod.  But it only delayed the inevitable. On the first play, Manny threw a pass to Earl Espejo who showed everybody why he his called "Jedi Master".  He juked and swerved and ducked and bobbed as Richard Friend and Eric tried desperately to tag him, and were finally able to 10 yards short of the goal line.  One play later, however, Manny threw a quick pass to JP, who came out of the backfield, for a 10 yard TD, putting Blue up 21-14.

And it would not stop there.  Two plays into Red's next drive, JP Intercepted a pass from Eric.  And two plays after that JP had his second touchdown of the day scoring on an 8 yard pass from Manny. Making the score 28-14.

Red never gave up though.  Eric drove his team down the field and scored on a 1 yard pass to Rich.  Then after Blue went 4 plays and out, Red took one play to score on a 10 yard pass from Eric to Aaron, tying the score up at 28 a piece as the teams went into halftime.

Blue Started the second half, and with JP at the controls, they drove right down the field and scored on a pass to Earl. Red, not even close to giving up, drove all the way down to the 15 yard line, when Eric threw a fade pass to Cesar Galang in the endzone.  Manny jumped up and snagged his first interception of the year.

JP took over at quarterback and moved Blue right down the field.  When it looked like Blue would be going up by two scores, Aaron stepped in front of a passed destined for Manny, intercepted it and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown knotting the game back up at 35 a piece.

With Manny back at the helm, Blue was still only able to get out to their own 30 yard line before turning the ball over on downs.  And Eric wasted no time.  A couple of plays later, as Cesar ran a corner route, Eric threw a perfect fade to him to put Red up 42-35.

Blue got the ball back, and decided they had had enough of this back and forth stuff.  Manny drive Blue right down the field.  Then, when they were 35 yards out, Manny got flushed out of the pocket, and ran 35 yards for a TD, tying the game back up at 42.

Red started their drive simple enough, but at mid-field, on a Half Back option play, Cesar threw an errant pass that was picked off by Earl.  JP took over at QB again, and only took a couple of plays to get Blue back into the endzone again with a 10 yard pass to Jarrod. 49-42

Eric, determined as every, took over at the 10 yardline.  It showed, when on the second play of the series, he saw a wide open Alan Mendoza.  And as soon as he threw it, Allan looked away, invoking one of our quotes of the week, "PAY ATTENTION ALAN" by Eric.  Luckily he turned back and caught the ball. Red got back to mid-field again, when on 4th down and 2, Eric threw an easy pass to Aaron, who let it slip through his fingers.  And the ball reverted back to Blue.  JP stayed in at QB, and drove right down the field again.  Then, 25 yards out, he threw a perfect strike to Earl, putting them up by 2 touchdowns.

With only 10 minutes left, Eric wouldn't give up.  2 plays into the drive, he threw a 40 yard bomb to Aaron.  Then two plays after that, threw a 2 yard touchdown pass to Macky.  56-49

Then JP took over.  With 7 minutes left, Blue methodically picked apart Red.  Slowly but surely they ate up the clock and moved down the field.  They never gave the ball back to Red and won with a final score of 56-49.

Did You Notice?

Macky has a streak of 3 games with an Interception.

Of the 8 TD's that Blue Scored, JP had his hand in 6 of them, Throwing for 4 TD's and and catching 2.  He also had 2 Interceptions.

Sarah and Donnie were the only two people on Blue to not have an interception, though each had one slip through their fingers.

Manny scored the first rushing touchdown of the year for HBL.
