Game #9

Rain Bowl Part II, Score and Score Again.  But BKA - The Pad Your Stats Game.

The field was a little shorter than normal.  The halves would be shorter than usual.  And it was a little colder than we had been used to.  On top of all that, it was raining.  Not too hard, but enough that it would be a factor.  And it had been raining hard for several hours before hand, so the new field was riddle with puddles of standing water.

Initially, the teams started out with Eric Espejo, Jarrod Tackett and Donnie Conty wearing Blue.  On Red were Manny Mendoza, Richard Friend and Jon Pettyjohn. At half time though, Cesar "Mufasa" Galang showed up, and Manny switched over to being All Time Offense.  But I am jumping way ahead of myself here.  There was a ton of football played way before half time.  And the first half was only 45 minutes long.

Eric decided that since the teams were 3 on 3, that there should be new Quarterbacks.  So Jarrod and Rich took command of their respective teams.  Red won the toss and go the ball first. A little bit rusty, Jarrod was only able to move Red 9 yards before the ball was turned over on downs to Blue.

Rich took over and 2 plays later he hit Manny in the endzone for a 11 yard TD and the Lead.  1-0

Jarrod took no time in striking back.  1 play and 70 yards later, the score was tied at 1 a piece as Eric ran in a score off a pass from Jarrod.

Rich took flight again and worked his team down the field, 10 yards at a clip.  Then he hit Manny on a deep post pattern for 39 yards and Blue's second score of the game. 2-1

Jarrod tried to slow things down a bit as he drove Red down field.  a couple of short passes here to Donnie, a couple of flips to Eric.  Then he hit Eric on a out and up, though Eric had to turn around to catch it and actually ran backwards for several yards before Rich tagged him and stopped the gain at 28 yards.  2 plays later, Jarrod hit Donnie for a 5 yard score and tied the game back up at 2.

On the second play of the next series it looked like Blue was going to score another quick one as Rich hit Manny on a Go Route down the sidelines.  Manny had a good 15-20 yard lead on Eric when he inexplicably slowed down and allowed him to catch up.  He then tried to lateral the ball to Jon, but threw it a bit to far and the play ended 20 yards short of the endzone.  It didn't seem to phase Rich though, a couple plays later he hit Jon for a 10 yard score. 3-2.

Red decided that enough was enough, and they pulled out a couple of tricks from their hat. Jarrod huddled his team up and called a half back option play.  He iked the ball and handed it off to Eric.  Who took a couple of steps and saw that Jarrod was free and clear down the sidelines.  Hitting him in full stride, Jarrod coasted 63 yards for the TD and a tie game.

On the first play of Blue's next series it looked like they would take the lead right back when Jon took a handoff from Rich, headed towards the sideline, turned the corner on a closely pursuing Eric and headed 70 yards towards the endzone.  However, while Jon was streaking towards the endzone, Jarrod made the statement "Too bad just touching a shirt with the tip of your finger doesn't count".  Too bad for Blue actually, since that does count as a tag.  Jon's 70 yard run was reduced to 11 yards and no touchdown.  Things went from bad to worse for Blue when, during their own half back option, Jon threw in Interception to Jarrod.

One play later, Red made them really pay.  Jarrod handed the ball off to Eric, who handed the ball off to Donnie for a Reverse.  Donnie quickly saw Jarrod was wide open down the middle of the field and hit him in full stride.  40 yards and a touchdown later Red had it's first lead of the game 4-3.

It didn't last for long.  One player later, Rich threw a pass over the middle to Jon, who pulled away from the coverage and scored, tying the score back at 4.

Red didn't relent, but Blue's defense was up to the task.  It took 8 plays for Red to get out 2 receptions.  But on the second reception, Donnie took it to the house for a 58 yard touchdown putting Red back up 5-4.

Rich stepped back in at QB and started to work the field again.  However it only lasted a couple plays as Jarrod stepped in front of an errant pass and intercepted it.  The switch last 1 play as Rich got the ball back for Blue by grabbing an interception himself. Blue made this series count and scored on a 15 yard TD pass from Rich to Manny tying the game back up with just about a minute left in the half.

Red hurried up to try and score one last time before the half since Blue was getting the ball first after the break.  But again, on the first play, Jarrod was picked off.  This time by Jon.  Blue hurried to the line and hiked the ball just before the gun went off for halftime, but the pass fell incomplete and the teams went into the half tied at 5.

Cesar showed up at half time, Manny was elected at the Rotator and the clock was set to only 40 minutes for  the second half. Blue started off with the ball and Rich handed the reins over to Manny.  Manny took his time and drove Blue right down the field with precision passing.  He ended the drive with an 18 yard pass to the fresh Cesar for a touchdown. 6-5

Switched over to Red, Manny took over at QB for them as well.  And, again, he drove down the field with short to mid-range passing.  Culminating with a 14 yard toss to Donnie to tie the game back up at 6.

Blue started to drive down  the field again.   But this time it only took a couple of plays before Manny hit Cesar for a 40 yard touchdown and the lead again 7-6.

When Red got the ball back, Eric took over at QB.  Though it only lasted 3 plays, when Jon picked off a pass intended for Jarrod, giving Blue the ball back and a chance to go up by 2.  Which is exactly what they did 1 play later, as Jon took a hand off from Manny and ran it 20 yards to pay dirt. 8-6

Eric and Manny swapped QB duties during the Red's series.  Short passes to Donnie and Jarrod moved the ball right down the field.  Blue tried as hard as they could keep them out of the endzone and stopped Red on 2 successive pass plays on the 1 yardline.  However, a quick pass to Jarrod on the next play pulled Blue back to within 1 touchdown.  8-7

Blue again drove down the field with Manny at the helm.  He spread the abll around to everybody.  10 yards to Rich, 5 to Cesar, 15 to Jon.  Then ended the series with a 10 yard pass to Cesar for his 3rd TD of the game and putting Blue back up by 2 scores. 9-7.

Eric took back over at QB full time for Red.  And, again, on the third play of the series, he floated a pass to Jarrod.  Both he and Jon went up for the pass, but only Jon came down with it.

Cesar asked for the rock and took control right away.  2 plays later he hit Manny for a 33 yard touchdown putting Blue up by a commanding 3 scores.  10-7

Manny took the helm for the Red team again, and struck quickly.  And two 20 yard passes, one each to Donnie and Eric, setup a 30 yard pass to Jarrod for a touchdown, bringing Red back to within 2.

Cesar again took control.  And again, 2 plays later, Blue scored.  A quick pass to Jon turned into a 65 yard touchdown. putting Blue back up by 3. 11-8

Red struck right back. With Manny calling the plays still, he hit Eric for 10 yards.  Then caught a glimpse of a wide open Donnie who had slipped behind the Blue defense. Hitting him in full stride, Donnie took off, stopping only for a celebratorial roll in the endzone. 11-9

Manny took over the controls for Blue on their next series.  Moving the ball right down the field.  Then on a scramble, he was able to get just out side of the reach of both Donnie and Eric and he rambled in for a 45 yard touchdown. 12-9.

With just over 2 minutes left in the game, Red took the ball and moved it quickly down the field.  Switching the QB duties from Eric to Jarrod to Manny along the way.  The drive ended with Manny hitting Jarrod in the endzone for an 8 yard score and the end of the game. 12-10

"Sh*t.  He's fast!  Aaron, you're not allowed to bring along any more friends" (After Jon took off on a running play and Eric was unable to catch him)

Donnie:
"OOO.  OWWW.  D*MMIT.  I'M STUCK" (while trying to walk through some brush to take a leak during halftime)

Aaron:
"Wusses" (after Eric decided the second half would only be 35 minutes, while he was dry and walking around under an umbrella)

Play of the Game:

Jon:
Jarrod was already up in the air and had one hand on the ball when Jon jumped up and snagged the ball out of his hands for an interception.

Donnie:
Even though they were down by 3 scores, it didn't stop them from having fun, as was evident when Donnie scored on a 60 yard pass and rolled through a huge puddle in the endzone in celebration.

Rich/Jarrod:
Throwing passes to each other on successive plays.  Even though they were on opposite teams.

Manny:
Passed for 7 TD's, caught a touchdown pass and rushed for one.  In one half.  That was only 40 minutes long.
