HBL Bowl VI

HBL Bowl VI - More Twists Than A Chubby Checker Concert

With the 6th HBL Bowl moments away, it looked to be a repeat of HBL 5,  with 2 people not showing up yet.  Eric, who was at a home inspection.  And Rookie Nick, who was out drinking the night before and didn't get in until an hour or so before the game started.

With a player missing from each team, the game was still on without a hitch.  Orange Started off with the ball after Blue deferred when they won the toss.  Unfortunately, Orange was unable to get anything going and gave the ball over to Blue on downs just passed mid-field.  On Blue's first series came one of the worst injures in HBL History.  On a fourth down play, JP threw a pass to Ric, who was just over the first down marker.  Cesar, covering Ric, came up to make a play and accidentally smacked the back of Ric's head instead of  the ball.  The finger hit in such a perfect angle that the bone on his finger snapped and cut right through the skin. Needless to say, play was stopped as Cesar pulled the bone back into the skin and looked to get a towel to cover it.  Leanne, our resident Paparazzi, took Cesar to the hospital, where he received 2 layers of stitches and a split to repair the cut and broken finger. (See side bar for his actions the following week)

Luckily, Miguel had shown up earlier and took Cesar's place on Orange.  Blue continued their first drive after the stoppage of play and finished it off with a nice touchdown to Demetrius, who had been out all year with a  knee injury.  Blue 7 - Orange 0

Orange mounted their own drive with Manny still in at QB and ending this drive better than the first, with a 5 yard TD to Donnie, in which JP actually hit the ball first and Donnie picked the tipped ball out of the air for the score.  One play later though, Blue was back up by 7 and JP hit Demetrius for a 70 yard TD. - Blue 14 - Orange 7

Manny rallied his team and worked the ball right down the field again.  This time ending the drive with a 5 yard TD to a diving Earl in the front corner of the endzone.  JP Continued his mastery for Blue and worked them just past midfield, when he hit a wide open Ric for a 35 yard touchdown. Blue 21 - Orange 14

With just under 10 minutes to play, Manny worked the ball down the field and scored on another 5 yard TD pass, this time to Edwin to tie it back up.  With just under 2 minutes left in the half Steve got his first call at QB, thought it only lasted one play, as JP took back over.  And with just seconds left in the Half, JP made his first mistake of the day.  He threw an errant pass that was picked off by Miguel.  Orange barely got off a play before the half time gun went off.  Manny got the ball to Daniel, who threw a long bomb to Earl who was wide open down field.  Earl juked, scrambled and actually told someone "I am not the person you want to tag" while waving his hand in front of them before he scored a touchdown.  Unfortunately, the initial pass to Daniel made Earl's work for naught as you can only have one forward pass per play.  Halftime - Blue 21 - Orange 21

The second half started with Blue garnering the ball and wasting no time.  JP sped down the field with several quick strikes and finished it off with a 15 yard touchdown to Rich. One play later, another R helped blue again This time it was Ric as he pulled down an interception off a Manny pass that was just off it's mark.  Blue 28 - Orange 21

Just a couple of plays later, JP hit Rich for a one yard TD. and like that, Blue was up by two scores. Manny didn't let his team slide into oblivion, with his first HBL Bowl win on his mind, he quickly drove right back down the field and hit Donnie over the middle 10 yards out from the endzone.  Donnie scrambled and dove the final 3 yards for the score to bring them back to within 7. Blue 35 - Orange 28

By this time, Eric was able to finish his home inspection and make it out onto the field.  His entrance was no less crowd rousing. than Shane Falco's in 'The Replacements".  Eric would be the rotator and play one both teams.  His first tour would be with Blue and he immediately took over at QB.  For not having played or even warmed up, he stepped in easily and moved the ball right down the field.  Unfortunately, his first shot into the endzone was picked off by Miguel.   Manny, seeing an opportunity to bring his team back into a tied, moved Orange quickly down the field.  and 8 yards out, he hit Daniel in the endzone for the tying touchdown. - Blue 35 - Orange 35

JP & Earl had to step away from the game at this point, due to "Family Obligations" that have plagued the HBL this year.  Luckily, they were on separate teams, so there would be no need for and team change-ups.  Eric continued at QB for Blue and this time he wouldn't be denied a score as he quickly drove Blue down the field and hit Rich for a 15 yard touchdown. Manny drove Orange right back down and tied it up once again with a 10 yard pass to Eric. - Blue 42 - Orange 42

Quickly Eric got Blue back to midfield, when he hit Ric, who was wide open in the secondary for a 40 yard touchdown.  A few plays later, with time beginning to wind down in the game, a Manny pass to Miguel was picked off by Steve. - Blue 49 - Orange 42

Just a couple of plays later, Steve finished what he started with his interception by catching a 20 yard pass from Eric for a touchdown.  and for the second time in the half, Orange was down by two scores.  This time with only a few minutes left.  Orange never  gave up though.  They quickly moved the ball down the field and hit a long strike to Miguel for a 20 yard TD - Blue 56 - Orange 49

Blue slowed the pace down and methodically moved down the field.  This time they ended the game where they began with a 10 yard TD to Demetrius.  Quickly Orange moved it right back down and scored in just a couple of plays after a 50 yard play to Miguel, then a 2 yard TD to Daniel.  Blue 63 - Orange 56

With that last score, that left only 1 minute on the clock for Orange to try and get the ball back and score.  Which in the HBL isn't much time at all.  after two plays, the clock expired and Blue was declared the victor.

Did You Notice?

5 people entered the game late or left the game early

The only person to not catch a touchdown on Blue was JP, who QB'ed the whole time he was playing.

Eric played less than a half, only QB'ed for Blue and had only 130 less yards than Manny who played the whole game at QB.

Ric had an INT in both of his HBL Bowl appearances

Aaron Bagby snagged his first HBL Bowl win in his Rookie season.  He may as well retire. :)

Edwin pulled in 8 catches and a touchdown in his inaugural HBL Bowl game.

Miguel did superb in subbing for Cesar, pulling in 2 interceptions and a touchdown for Orange.

JP had one of his best days at QB ever, hitting 66% of his passes and throwing 5 TD's and only 1 INT.

Manny had his best playoff outing with 8 TD's and only 2 INTS and a 120.76 QB rating.

After playing only 1 game all year, Earl came in and put up solid numbers with 5 catches and a touchdown in just over a half worth of play..

Demetrius has yet to lose and HBL Bowl. And after scoring no TD's last year, scored 3 this year.

Donnie's dive for a touchdown should not have surprised the defense.  He has made a namefor himself in the HBL as a person who will sacrifice life an limb to make a play.

Daniel had one of the highest TD to Catch ratios with 2 TD's on 6 catches.

Steve's INT added to his added to his HBL Bowl legacy and has only had one game where he didn't make an INT.

All three of Rich's TDs came in the second half, when teams need scores the most.

After getting two layers of stitches and a splint for his finger, Cesar rested all of one week.  He was out playing in a basketball tournament the following weekend.

Quote of the Game:

Earl: "Didn't somebody go to Med school" (after Cesar had compound fractured his middle finger and a play on the running joke that Miguel went to Med School and not Mexico)
