The "Fall Down, Go Boom" Game

The teams were set fairly quickly and it was Blue with Manny, Rich, Cesar, Nick and Ric. Orange was Bagby, Eric, Donnie, Daniel and Steve. A friend of Nick’s, Brian, was set as the rotator. He would be on offense for the first half and defense for the second. Blue started out with the ball and its only took 1 play for everybody to realize it was going to be a long game as Manny hit Ric for an 80 yard touchdown pass. Then 2 plays later, after Eric hit Steve for a 70 yard pass play, Eric hit Brian for a 10 yard touchdown. And in 3 plays, we already had 2 scores. Manny slowed thing down a little with a nice steady drive, ending it with a 10 yard touchdown pass to Rich. Orange came right back with a drive of their own and tied the game back up on a 7 yard TD pass to Steve. Then, after an errant pass, Manny hit Ric again for his second 80 yard TD of the game. Orange looked to slow it back down and, with precision passing, Eric worked t he field to his advantage, ending the drive with a 7 yard TD to Brian. Blue 21 – Orange 21

Blue then had a nice long drive of their own. Unfortunately, it ended with them giving the ball back to Orange 20 yards from the promised land after a failed 4th down attempt. But 1 play later, Blue got the ball back as Cesar pulled in an Interception. And just a couple of plays later, Manny found Nick for a 12 yard TD. Orange worked it right back down the field again, with Eric finding a wide open Daniel who scored on a 35 yard pass play. With time running out in the half, Blue quickly moved right back down the field and Manny found Rotator Brian in the endzone for a 1 yard TD. Orange managed to quickly get back down the field, but half time ended the drive before they could punch it in. Blue 35 – Orange 28

The second half started with Orange taking the ball right down the field with a nice long drive. Eric finished it off with a 2 yard TD pass to Steve. Blue quickly came back and scored on a 40 yard TD pass to Cesar to put them back up by a score. Steve took over at QB for Orange, unfortunately, their drive stalled after 5 plays and Blue got the ball at Orange’s 30 yard line. And just a couple of plays later, Manny found Cesar again in the endzone for a 1 yard TD pass. Steve stayed in at QB and ran a drive that would have the two weirdest plays of the game. A pass to Daniel netted 60 yards, but it was Brian who made the play as he fell, tripping over his own feet, just after exclaiming to everybody that Daniel was his for the taking. Then two plays later, Brian picked off a pass in the endzone and had a sure 103 yard TD return, when he again tripped over his own feet. It seemed he couldn’t get out of his own way. Blue 49 – Orange 35

Blue then drove right down the field, but as it looked like they were going to give the ball back to Orange, Manny hit Ric for a 35 yard TD on 4th down. Eric took back over at QB for Orange and quickly went right down the field scoring on a 5 yard TD to Steve. They then attempted only the 2nd two-point conversion in HBL History. And like the first, it failed. Cesar took over at QB for Blue and drove them quickly to the 30 yard line of Orange, when he found Ric open in the endzone for his 4th touchdown of the game. Eric never let up and drove Orange right back down the field, scoring on a 5 yard pass to Steve. With time winding down, Orange put on a great defensive show and made Blue go 4 and out. 2 plays later, Eric hit Steve for his 5th TD of the day. With just a minute left in the game, Blue was able to run the clock out and preserve a win.

Did You Notice?

Both 2 point conversions that have been tried in the history of the HBL have failed.

Brian wasn't the only person who fell over his own feet, Donnie had a clear shot at the endzone on a run play when he tripped over his own feet 10 yards shy of the goal line.

Ric had 2 80 yard TD's in the first 20 minutes of the game.

With Eric at QB, Orange scored on all but 2 drives. and 1 was cut short by half time.
